During King Rama V’s reign, significant changes in clothing and hairstyles occurred. His first trip abroad in 1870 exposed him to the prosperity of neighboring countries, inspiring him to introduce reforms. This led to the decline of the traditional men’s interior hairstyle as it was replaced with shorter hair, according to royal preferences.
The Rajapataen shirt was created in 1872 to address the discomfort of Western-style outerwear in Thailand’s climate. This unique shirt featured a closed neckline with five buttons, eliminating the need for undershirts and neckerchiefs. It was named “Rajapataen,” derived from “Raj” (royal) and “Pattern.”
King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) brought about significant changes in men’s attire. He mandated the use of different colors of “Pha Muang”, royal shirts, and European hats in the royal court. Additionally, he promoted the “Rong Song style” or “Siamese undercut” for men’s hair, which involved cutting the hair short around the head while keeping the top hair long.
