หลังจากที่รัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงเสด็จไปต่างประเทศครั้งแรกเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2413 ทรงทอดพระเนตรความเจริญของบ้านเมืองใกล้เคียงอย่างสิงคโปร์และชวา โปรดฯ ให้ผู้ตามเสด็จไว้ผมยาวตั้งแต่ก่อนออกเดินทาง จากนั้นพระองค์ทรงเปลี่ยนแบบพระเกศาด้วย ข้าราชการทั้งหลายก็เปลี่ยนตามพระราชนิยม ทำให้ทรงมหาดไทยเริ่มเสื่อมความนิยม ผู้หญิงก็เปลี่ยนแปลงทรงผม เปลี่ยนจากผมปีกแบบเก่ามาไว้ผมยาว ดังนั้นประเพณีไว้ผมปีกของสตรีไทยสมัยโบราณก็หายไป พร้อม ๆ กับผมทรงมหาดไทยของบุรุษก็หายตามไปด้วย นอกจากเรื่องทรงผมแล้ว ในด้านเสื้อผ้าอาภรณ์นั้น รัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงเห็นว่าเสื้อนอกแบบฝรั่งใส่แล้วร้อนอบอ้าวเพราะต้องมีเสื้อใน ผ้าผูกคอ จึงเริ่มเพิ่มเสื้อแขนยาวแล้วจึงห่มสไบทับ โดยโปรดฯ ให้ผู้หญิงในราชสำนักใส่เสื้อแขนยาว ชายเสื้อเพียงบั้นเอว และห่มแพร สไบเฉียงบ่านอกเสื้อ และให้สวมเกือกบู๊ตกับถุงเท้าตลอดน่อง และยังเกิด “เสื้อลายลูกไม้”และ “เสื้อแขนพองแบบหมูแฮม” โดยมีเจ้าจอมมารดาแพเป็นผู้นำสายสะพายผ้าแพรมาใช้ โดยในสมัยนั้น รัชกาลที่ 5 โปรดทรงม้าออกตรวจราชการตามท้องถิ่นต่าง ๆ ข้าราชสำนักฝ่ายในจึงต้องทรงม้าหรือขี่ม้าตามเสด็จฯด้วย เจ้าจอมมารดาแพจึงคิดประดิษฐ์แฟชันสตรีในการแต่งกายแบบขี่ม้า เพราะหากจะใช้สไบเฉียง เวลาขี่ม้าลมพัดแรงจัดสไบย่อมจะปลิวหลุดจากตัวได้ง่าย เจ้าจอมมารดาแพจึงใช้สายสะพายผ้าแพรแทน เครื่องแต่งกายสตรีในพระราชสำนักฝ่ายในระยะแรกจึงเป็นการผสมผสานกันระหว่างแบบของยุโรปและของไทยดั้งเดิม และพัฒนาอย่างต่อเนื่องด้วยการเพิ่มความเป็นตัวเองลงไปในแบบเครื่องแต่งกายนั้น ๆ เช่น การประดิดประดอย ประดับตกแต่งอย่างละเอียดลออพิถีพิถันแบบไทย ๆ ผสมกับแบบต่างประเทศซึ่งมีเข้ามาเรื่อย ๆ ทำให้นำมาปรับให้เข้ากับของดั้งเดิมจนกลายเป็นความงดงามของประเพณีการแต่งกายของไทยสืบมา ที่มา: […]
